Matthew R. Meier holds a Ph.D. in Media & Communication from Bowling Green State University. His research is situated at the intersection/s of rhetoric, comedy, and democratic theory. His dissertation, “Laughing at American Democracy: Citizenship and the Rhetoric of Stand-up Satire,” addresses the evolution of contemporary stand-up comedy in the United States and it’s role in providing equipment for democratic citizenship. Beyond his dissertation, Dr. Meier has written essays on comedians such as Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Mel Brooks as well as popular culture texts including the Blue Collar Comedy Tour and Shaun of the Dead. Recently, he co-edited Standing Up, Speaking Out: Stand-up Comedy and the Rhetoric of Social Change.

Excited to be a part of the West Chester community, Matt lives with his spouse, their daughter, and their westie. Outside of the office, Matt enjoys playing the guitar, close-up magic, and cooking. He is also an avid sports fan who keeps rooting for the Chicago Cubs against his better judgment.
